Summer Fun!!

Hello all my wonderful Errington Division 1'ers!!  I hope you are all having a wonderful summer and getting out and enjoying this spectacular weather:))) I'm having lots of fun in the sun hiking, mountain biking, paddling, swimming...you name it!!  I'm also teaching Health and Fitness camps at St. George's School in Vancouver which is lots of fun:)

As for the question, "Is Mrs. Pogue moving to Australia?"  The answer is YES!! My husband was offered a promotion in his job, which is moving us to Melbourne, Australia.  We are going to enjoy the rest of the summer in Vancouver, and will be moving down under at the end of August.  I will of course continue to post on our blog to keep you informed on our exciting new life down there, and hope to have a new class after not too long!  I will always remember all of our fun days together at Errington:)

Keep enjoying your summer, and I can't wait to hear all your exciting stories!

Let the Good Times Roll!

Please enjoy browsing these pictures from our 2013 Track and Field meet at Minoru; Errington performed very well, and showed great spirit and enthusiasm in the process!

Although we got a little wet in the process, Grouse Mountain was an exciting adventure for all!  From the exciting Gondola Ride, to the wet chair lift up the Peak Chair, to the word's only "Eye of Wind", a visit with the playful grizzlies Coola and Grinder, delicious hot chocolate, informative movie about the Owls and Grizzlies of Grouse Mountain, and a long bus ride home...Division One enjoyed one very unique and adventurous day!!

"The Power of Story" Activities

In our Social Justice and Global Citizenship unit, we did several activities that encouraged us to visualize and empathize with other cultures and communities.  We looked at several overarching themes present in the following picture books: "The Butterfly" by Patricia Polacco, "The Lotus Seed" by Sherry Garland, "The Harmonica" by Tony Johnston, and "Gleam and Glow" by Eve Bunting.  The themes we noticed were most prevalent were HOPE, TRUST, and NEW BEGINNINGS.  The activities we did were fun, and also encouraged students in Division One to reflect on and appreciate their own lives and surroundings, and make connections to the world around them.  I am very proud of the maturity and responsibility Division One demonstrated throughout this unit. :)

Shakespeare's Twelfth Night

We have a Division 1 Prezi set up in order to keep track of the characters, and add notes about each character as we read through the play.  We will work on this primarily in class together, and add to it together; however if you have something you would like to add or share about the play at any point, feel free to add!  You may add a new slide, or add to the topics we already have.  Enjoy!

Trust + Respect + Responsibility = Leadership!

What does it take to be a leader?

What qualities should a GREAT leader have?

What is trust?                                           What is respect?

What is the VALUE of trust and respect in a relationship?

How do we build trust?

How do we gain a person's respect?

What is responsibility?

How do we show responsibility?

Answer all the above questions in full sentences.  You may answer in whatever order you wish, and some answers might be combined, or blend into the next question.  Think about the picture book "The Butterfly", our "Trust" activity we did in class today, and our discussion about leadership and what makes a good or a GREAT leader.  You may use examples from any of the picture books we have looked at, and any activities and discussions we have had, in order to support your answers.  Take some time to think about this, don't rush it!  You have until Friday, so discuss it with friends too and hear what they think:)

The Lotus Seed

After reading "The Lotus Seed" by Sherry Garland, and hearing Mrs. Fraser's heartbreaking and yet en-capturing and inspiring story, let's reflect.  Please take some time to read through your questions and answers, and other notes you collecting during Mrs. Fraser's visits, then answer the following questions:

1.) How did Mrs. Fraser's story make you feel?
2.) Were you able to make connections and/or empathize with any part of Mrs. Fraser's life?
3.) How does Mrs. Fraser's story relate to "The Lotus Seed"?  What connections did you notice?
4.) Compare your childhood to that of Mrs. Fraser and Ba in "The Lotus Seed".  How do these stories make you feel about your own life?  (Appreciative? Grateful?)  Why?
5.) How would you describe Mrs. Fraser and Ba's perspective or outlook on life?  Consider what they have lived through and the life they were able to create for themselves after all the hardships they encountered.

Please answer these questions as a 'reply' to this post (make sure you write your first name or computer name), or type and hand them in.
